Your DIY options
- Bena Sanitary Landfill (east of town off Hwy 58) — the county's main landfill; per-ton fees apply and lines run long on Saturdays.
- Transfer stations — Kern County runs several drop-off sites around the metro for household loads; smaller loads, shorter drives.
- Special Waste Facility — free household hazardous drop-off for residents: paint, chemicals, e-waste, batteries.
- Charity drop-offs — usable furniture and goods are welcome at local thrift operations; call ahead for large pieces.
Hours, fees, and accepted items change — check Kern County Public Works' waste pages before loading the truck. Mattresses, tires, and fridges often have special handling or per-item fees.
